You may be exceptionally witty upon straps to a man whose father had been hanged. The principal imperative for fruitful discussion is to know your organization well.
There is another statute of a related sort to be watched, in particular, not to talk too well when you do talk. You don’t bring yourself much up in the feeling of another, if while you interest him, you twisted him in the most pleasant point, his self esteem. Other than bothering vanity, a steady stream of mind is too much exhausting to the audience members. A witty man is a pleasing colleague, however a tedious companion. “”The mind of the organization, by the butt of the organization,”” says Mrs. Montagu, “”is the meanest individual in it. The immense obligation of discussion is to go with the same pattern, as you do at whist: if the eldest hand plays the deuce of jewels, let not his next neighbor dash down the ruler of hearts, since his hand is brimming with distinction. I don’t love to see a man of mind win every one of the traps in discussion.””
In tending to any one, generally take a gander at him; and if there are a few present, you will please more by guiding some segment of your discussion, as an account or proclamation, to every one separately thus.
