7 wonders of the modern world
It was in 2000 that Canadian-Swiss Bernard Weber and New 7 Wonders Foundation based in Zurich, Switzerland took an initiative to select the new wonders of the world from a selection of 200 existing historical monuments located in various places in the world. The new list was announced on July 7, 2007 in Lisbon. According to the above mentioned organization, more than 100 million votes were cast through the Internet and telephone.
Following is the list of the new Seven Wonders of the World
1) Machu Picchu, Peru Machu Pichu, site of the ancient Inca civilization located atop the Andean mountain in South America was rediscovered in 1911 by Yale archeologist Hiram Bingham. It is one of the most beautiful ancient sites in the world.
2) Great Wall of China, China The Great Wall of China is a long wall built from east to west along the northern borders of China. It is made of stone, brick, wood and other materials and its main purpose was to fortify the Chinese empire against attacks by nomadic tribes. Its construction started as early as 7th century B.C. The total length of the wall including its various branches is 21,196 km.
